SPOTLIGHT ON… THE FARRELL CHESTERFIELD
A racehorse owning Tory Lord is an unlikely fashion icon, but step forward George Stanhope and take a bow. Not literally of course as he’s long-since dead, but it was he, the 6th Earl of Chesterfield, who first wore what we now know as the Chesterfield.
And he was something of a pioneer too. In the very early 1800s, men wouldn’t dare remove their coats in public, but the style Stanhope later adopted sparked a move away from fancy decoration and towards comfort and practicality.
The coat he leant his name to is a versatile one. It can be worn over formal suits in the city or over rolled-up jeans à la Teddy Boys. The Farrell version favours a classic heavy twill with a velvet top collar for added sharpness. Take a look at it in the Official Farrell Shop.
